Audience Triggers In Ga4 8211 Personalize And Optimize Your Conversion Tracking
Management Summary
Would you like to track the purchase of certain products by customers who completed the purchase after clicking on the newsletter? Using the new Audience Trigger feature in Google Analytics 4, this and other complex events can be individually configured.
How do audience triggers work in GA4?
As soon as users match the definitions of the audience, they are assigned to it and a corresponding event is fired using an audience trigger. Up to 20 audience trigger events can be created per property, which can be activated as conversions with just one click.
How are audience triggers created?
In order to use the audience trigger feature, custom audiences must first be created. As soon as a user is assigned to this audience, a corresponding event is fired thanks to the audience trigger, e.g. ‘new_frequent_customer’.
Step by step guide:
Step 1: Navigate to the ‘Configure’ tab in your GA4 property.
Step 2: Select ‘Audiences’ or create your custom audience using the conditions provided and the audience overview will open
Example: To record customers who have made an in-app purchase more than three times in a month, an ‘in_app_purchase’ event with the parameter condition ‘> 3 in any 30-day period’ can be configured based on the ‘event_count’ parameter.
Step 3: Click on the three points of the audience that you want to use for the audience trigger
Step 4: Click on ‘Edit’ to see the audience configuration
Step 5: In the right box under ‘Audience Trigger’ click on ‘Create new’
Step 6: In the popup enter the corresponding event name, e.g. ‘new_frequent_customer’
Attention: The event name must not begin with a number, otherwise an error message will appear
Step 7: You can also tick the ‘Log an additional event when audience membership refreshes’ checkbox. Events are also fired if the user is assigned to the audience repeatedly.
Step 8: Save the audience trigger by clicking ‘Save’. The audience trigger is now displayed including the event name in the right box of the audience configuration. Here you can also edit or delete the audience trigger when you click on the Pencil or Trash button.
Using the debug view, you can check the newly created audience trigger event ‘new_frequent_customer’, which fires immediately after the ‘in_app_purchase’ event after the third purchase within 30 days. After a few hours, the custom audience and the event are also recorded in the real-time reports and the event report.
Optional:
Step 9: If you want to record the audience trigger event as a conversion, you can adjust this setting in the event configuration.
Conclusion:
Audience triggers enable the tracking of complex events and conversions based on custom audiences. With the help of this feature, diverse and advanced audience conditions can be used as a basis to optimize conversion tracking.
